The Bar K is a West Texas cattle and goat ranch. We welcome vistors to our guest house on the Pecos River to enjoy paddling, fishing, hunting, and exploring.
The ranch sits in the northwestern corner of Val Verde County, in the western Edwards Plateau region of West Texas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...). Here, the Pecos River cuts canyons through the Chihuahuan Desert (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... & https://www.nature.org/content...). This is remote and wild country, home to whitetail and mule deer, mountain lions, black bears, audads, blackbuck antelope, coyotes and roadrunners, bobcats, badgers, foxes, turtles, ducks, snakes, and eagles, as well roaming feral goats and hogs. It is not uncommon to find evidence of earlier inhabitants, including Jumano and Coahuiltecan, Lipan and Mescalero Apaches, and Penateka Comanches.
The Babbs family owned the ranch in the late 1800s. The Chapmans bought the ranch early in the 20th century and raised livestock, including cavalary horses for the U.S. Army Remount Service, cattle, and sheep. After some years as a recreation property, the ranch is back in production. We have refurbished original buildings and improved the roads and river access. Working with the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service, we increased water distribution and improved fencing for rotational grazing and protection of riparian areas. We run a low fence ranch, and working with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department we participate in the Managed Lands Deer Program, focused on improving habitat, predator and invasive species control, and the quality of the wild deer herd. The fishing in our two miles of Pecos River is excellent, with abundant bass, catfish, drum, carp, and gar.
